“I was always a punk-rocker,” Jefferson's Barber Shop owner and co-founder Jeff Speers admits. “I was a head-banger when I was younger, with crazy long hair and all that.”
So it's perhaps unsurprising that Jefferson's Barber Shop is Commercial Drive's rock ‘n' roll hair destination. In addition to having “at least 50 years” of collective hair experience, co-founders Natasha Quewezance, David Journeay, Scot Campbell and Speers himself are performers and musicians of various stripes. Even the shop itself has a decidedly rock ‘n' roll flair, from the logo to the decor; the waiting area is piled high with ‘90s comic books, and the walls themselves are adorned with Pee Wee Herman and Beetlejuice dolls, Iron Maiden records and Akira action figures.
“This is all my stuff,” Jeff laughs. “A lot of it was from when I was a kid and some was from the old shop. It's good to have a place to actually show it so it's not just in a closet at my house. Sometimes people will bring stuff in. And anybody who comes in, I guarantee there's at least one thing where they can go: 'Oh, I used to have that!'”
