Really excellent food, great atmosphere, and an unbeatable view of the riverfront. A great place for a lovely meal with touch of sophistication, just a stone's throw out of the core.
My husband and I went to the River Mill for Valentine's Day 2012. We made our Reservatiosn ahead of time. This was the first time we have been at the River Mill in approx. 3-4 years, So it has been a while. The Food was excellent, Better then the last time we were there as I can remember. for our appetizer we shared a bruschetta-like appetizer that consisted of shrimp an avocados and some other things, I can't remember exactly, But it was very tasty and very fresh. I ordered Char(a pink fish that looks like salmon) and my husband ordered the Lamb. He ordered his medium Rare and it was brought to our table medium rare which we appreciated very much. Everything seemed to blend very well together. the food was hot and the presentation was beautiful and clean. for dessert i got a chocolate and raspberry mousse and was very decadent and rich, My Husband did not get dessert because he isn't a big dessert fan. Overall we had a lovely experience at The River Mill for our Valentine's Day and will most definitely be returning in the very near future.
Loved this restauant. As someone else mentioned we were sitting a little close to the piano player but not a big deal. The food was excellent except for one of the desserts, orange sabayon - definitely not worth $8.00.
Restaurant is cozy (ie: small). IT attracts a much older crowd (60+) so being a young couple we felt very out of place. The service was mediocre at best although the piano player added a nice touch. However, we were very close to the piano so it was too loud for us. The caesar made at the table was very interesting to see and was the highlight of the dinner; as was the view of the lake. The maincourse (we had the steak) was tasty but very small portions. Overall this is not a restaurant that I will be attending again.
Nice setting and atmosphere. We liked the piano player. Our server was very courteous and attentive (which, for 3 students, does not happen often in fancy restaurants). The food was not fantastic but alright. I split the scallops appetizer with a friend so they presented it to us on two separate plates, which was nice. Another friend had the tomato and onion salad but all it was was slices of tomato arranged nicely on a plate with some dressing on top - not worth $8. My steak came with melted cheese on top, which I hate - if it had been indicated on the menu I would have asked that it be left off. Other than that it's a nice place.
Granted the restaurant was not busy. A delightful pianist played familiar tunes and took our requests. The server was prompt and courteous, accurate and thorough. Cocktails were prepared to our taste and generous for today's price. The excellent Caesar was prepared at our table taking into account our likes and dislikes and served to the individual taste. The shrimps were plump, delicious being accompanied by a light curry sauce. The rack of lamp was outstanding, ordered rare and served rare. A rare occurrence these days! The request to have the rack served as one piece to maintain temperature was honoured without question. Plate presentation had eye appeal vegetables were el dente. Desert was good but considered average fare. Coffee was hot and flavourful and we departed most satisfied with our choice for the evening's dining.
A very beautiful restaurant, however compared to other restaurants with the same style (upscale) menus, a little more expensive. I found there table d'hote very expensive, other fine restaurants in Kingston run between 26-32/person compared to 44/person at River Mill. So we didn't opt for the table d'hote. The general menu was alright, service was fantastic and view wonderful. The linguine was nothing to fancy and my husband's steak came with a blue cheese sauce, that wasn't made clear in the menu, which kind of turned him off as he hates blue cheese. So he scraped it off. The table side caesar salad was very nice.
Lovely decor, good service, mediocre bland food served lukewarm, highly overpriced.
We were very disappointed with the attitude of our server. She was not at all pleasant and at times almost rude. She showed no interest in contributing to our enjoyment of the meal. Although difficult to give specific examples, she was generally inattentive. Our table was in a dark corner but we had to ask to have the candle lit and still wait about 10 minutes. As for the food, the French Onion soup and Caesar salad were excellent, especially the salad. The steak and pasta dishes were rated as good but the pheasant was a bit dry and the shrimp curry just didn't seem to work. The cheese and fruit was good but the crackers served with it were straight out of a box and just thrown on a plate. In a restaurant of this price range, I would expect bread, rolls or pita to accompany the cheese plate. Overall, the lack of attention to the finer details resulted in a disappointing experience and I would not return to the River Mill although in the past it had been my favourite restaurant in Kingston,
