What a fantastic location for a restaurant. This building was once an old abandoned factory, has now been transformed into a really nice place to dine. The decor is impressively tasteful, old stone walls,20ft.ceilings,original wooden beams and warm, inviting colours. Our service was good, the food was of equal value although my wife's tuna was cooked to well, instead of just being seared. We enjoyed our meals but it was the environment that will make us return! When asked by our server if it was a special occasion,I was treated to a very large piece of icecream cake in honor of my Birthday which we both shared,on the house.
I paid for a family gatherings, about $500+ the first time and $400+ the second time. The food was great the first time and the service was ordinary. I'm a good tipper, $100 for our servers. The second visit was just awful. I'm sure they forgot about us. We waited a LONG time for service. Other tables were served and the dinner crowd was thinning before our waitress arrived. The orders were wrong and none of us could finish our dinner. I told our waitress that our steaks were wrong. Her reply was "well that's what I wrote down". We went home for dessert. The restaurant has wonderful potential and the building has great atmosphere. However, for customers like me with a special celebration, the food and service must be good. It does not take much effort - just bring the right food with a smile. Would I go back? Not for a while. The Keg lost a lot of customers among my friends and family. There are many other interesting restaurants in the Niagara area.
Everything was excellent. Filet was a good portion and very tasty, prime rib was fatty but a big enough cut that you could work around that. Crab was a nice addition for only $8 extra. Loved the Caesar salad and there was lots of goodies in the spinache salad like cranberries, sweet pecans, very tasty. Bread as always is soooo good. Mixed veg was good and the garlic mashed were very nice and smooth. If I had one complaint it would be that the smaller sized wine glasses had an unpleasant dishwasher residue smell that took away from the wine, the larger glasses were fine. Our server was very classy and attentive without being overbearing like some. It's a noisy place (the air handling units are always humming) but it's a nice looking place, very clean. For the price we cannot go but a couple of times a year, but that makes it a special treat for us.
Fantastic Food, Service and Atmosphere! It was a Wonderful Birthday Dinner!!! The dessert was brought to our table with a sparkler, what a nice surprise! Thank You Keg!
As several previous reviewers experienced, we were also shown a 'not-great' small table at the side of the restaurant by the maitre d' even though it was a slow Tuesday evening and more preferable two and four person booths were available (we walked by them, in fact). Why do restaurants do this? What advantage is it to them to seat a customer at the worst table when better ones are available? Are they waiting for the Queen? In any case, our request for a booth was accommodated with no problem. Just a word of caution: don't take the first table offered when tables more to your liking are available. The scallops/bacon were excellent; the garlic shrimp not worth the price and a disappointment (small, tasteless with barely a garlic taste). The filets were done as requested - perfectly - so congrats to the kitchen. But, oops, the requested twice baked potato wasn't there (although the waitress offered to change the mashed for the requested baked). If the waitress had "calmed" down her approach a bit (she reminded us of a waitress on Mad TV) she might have gotten it right. There is nothing more irritating for one person to be eating while the other is still waiting as they fix the order, so I didn't change what was on my plate. Nonetheless, the mashed were fine, as were the mixed veggies (asparagus, peas, mushrooms) albeit a bit expensive ($8.85) for what you got (and shouldn't the kitchen remove the "string" on the snow peas?) Desserts: in our case the icecream "cake" varieties were excellent and good value. Coffee fine, although we had to request a second cup, it was not offered, as the waitress scooted away with our Mastercard. All in all a great building, relatively good food, but a bit lacking in staff for the price that we ultimately paid ($160 for two). If a restaurant charges that much it needs to offer better service otherwlse there are quite a number of other restaurants with better service willing to take that number of dollars
We have never been disappointed visiting here, with the exception of long waits on weekends.
Went for a drink at the bar. Nice atmosphere and very clean. This is an adult bar. No thumping music or weird teens. Classy. Wasn't impressed with our first waitress. We sat at a booth and after ordering we noticed room at the bar. Waitress saw us move and asked us to settle up the cost right there. Would have preferred paying at end of night like usual. Bartenders are great. Food is awesome. But some waitresses are a bit "moody" at times. I'll be back...
Excellent food, excellent service, a bit pricey, but come on, the food is amazing. We were situated within 2 minutes at the booth we wanted, it was my beautiful girlfriends birthday and at the end of the meal they gave her free slice of cake. I love this place, that was the 2nd time ive been there, and plan on going many more times.
We had the same problem that Mr. Beaver did -- The food was good and the waiter was great, however, the hostess was not. She didn't seat us where we asked despite a plethora of empty seats in the dinning room. When we were seated (in a booth near the entrance/kitchen area) it was far too cold and she gave us attitude when we asked for a different location (there were plenty to choose from that evening). Finally, I resorted to asking the manager to assist us with changing our seat location. He was wonderful. This Keg should serously look into hiring better, more professional hostesses. Bye the way, this was not the first time we have had this issue with the Keg in St. Catharines -- actually the third time to be precise.
Nice food, nice atmosphere but for the price you can get a steak elsewhere for half the price. WOrth trying once and then finding somewhere more affordable
Although we had a bit of a problem with our reservation it was made right with your manager. She was very courteous and understanding and handled the problem quite professionally. Our meals were delicious and our server, Scott H was very obliging-even to the point of making sure our guests were felt welcome. Thanx a lot. We'll be back.
What makes this place so wonderful, even if it didnt have great food and service, is the atmosphere of the building. This resteraunt is built in what must be the oldest building in St Catharines - an old rubber factory I believe. Giant wooden beams, Stone walls... this is the nicest Keg you will ever go to. Don't be afraid to dress up a little for the occasion!
all the food was absolutely amazing, everything from the bread to dessert. the atmosphere was welcoming, and our server was great.
My meal, a new york strip with potato and vegetables was very good .My friends filet-mignon was over-cooked the first time and barely cooked the second time .
Waiter was excellent. Hostess sat us quickly near door - very cold that night - asked to be moved - had to wait in bar - table we were eventually seated at had been empty when we arrived - it was still near front door - felt she was playing games with us. The overall feeling when we left the restaurant was not a good one.
