Upon graduating from the University of Fraser Valley in 1992, graphic designer Carrie MacKay started out at a print shop. “I wasn't very happy there, re-creating boring business cards & plain designs,” she recalls. “I decided I can do this better myself and jumped right in.” In 1996, she opened The Graphic Garden Design Studio. “You wear so many different hats when you run a business, rather than just doing the design work,” she says. “Looking back, I could have taken a business course maybe, but I'm glad I did it. I like being my own boss, making my own decisions.”
Learning the business side was easy because she was free to explore her creativity – her true passion. “I love solving creative problems – coming up with new ideas that are fresh and cool with neat and fun designs,” says Carrie.
She has a lot of creative outlets at The Graphic Garden Design Studio, much more than standard graphic designers. “A lot of people design only on computers, whereas I design on the computer and by hand as well. We meld the two together. We specialize in hand-drawn logo designs that we digitize on the computer. We do a lot of custom window paintings, and hand-drawn illustrations for print materials and packaging. People love the custom hand-drawn artwork that we keep alive in this now very digital world.”
