Weil’s of Westdale Bakery is very much a part of the long-standing history of the Hamilton neighbourhood it calls home. The bakery predates most businesses in Westdale village, and there’s a good reason for its popularity: every delectable item is homemade and baked from scratch, using only the finest ingredients.
Customers who step into the bakery are greeted with an intoxicating aroma that’s sure to make their nose tingle. There are breads, pastries, cookies, meat pies, the very popular chocolate chip bun, and more on offer. With so many appealing options, it can be very hard to choose.
The small shop on King Street West is steeped in tradition. “There are customers who have been coming for years,” says co-manager Sandra Lee. “There was one customer who said they’ve had every single thing from this bakery.”
“It’s kind of cool that we’re part of lots of people’s tradition,” adds co-manager Shannon Murphy. She notes that no matter the special occasion, the customers come here for their baked goods. She remembers a customer who said, “When I was little I got a chocolate chip bun here for 65 cents.”
“I think we’re part of people’s routines,” Sandra continues. “There are schools around, so they stop at Weil’s while they’re here, and pick up a loaf of bread.” But customers often visit the bakery for others treats instead. “It varies,” Sandra explains. “Sometimes people just come in for bread and other days they don’t buy bread and try everything else. People are like birds.”
