Nestled between Queen and King Street West, Jimmy’s Coffee has become a rustic refuge for condo-dwellers in the business district. Blink and you might even miss this narrow Victorian townhouse on Portland Street, whose looks can be deceiving—the café includes an enclosed graffiti-covered back patio, with electrical outlets no less.
Founder Phil Morrison has a knack for setting up shop in unconventional areas and this indie-chain—named Jimmy’s because Phil has never met a Jimmy that he didn’t like—has quickly built a reputation for its welcoming vibe and friendly service.
And while local coffee culture remains a competitive industry, the sense of community found here is what keeps customers loyal. “People don’t go next door for a cup of sugar anymore,” says general manager Elinor Barker. “They come to Jimmy’s Coffee and meet their neighbours for the first time. The regulars know each other by name.”

Phil Morrison never met a Jimmy he didn’t like, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a Torontonian who doesn’t swoon over the smooth Americanos at this Portland street café. Witty staff members banter jovially with waiting customers to ensure everyone feels like a regular. The talented baristas have been known to take foam art requests if you’re bold enough to ask for a personalized design. In the warmer months, ask for an iced cortado — the cold drink has an unexpected velvety texture and is the perfect mid-afternoon pick me up.

Photos of all kinds line the wall – from JFK to Jim Carrey – and plush, leather armchairs make up most of the furniture in the well-lighted back area. Among fresh juices and pastry snacks, Jimmy’s also hosts cold brew bottles from the ubiquitous local brand Station Cold Brew Coffee.
