Edmonton fitness classes for couples

Getting in shape is more fun if you have a partner to share the pain and sweat. If hitting the gym just isn’t your thing, here are a few ideas on fun classes to take together, or places to drop-in to get fit, in and around Edmonton. [Image credit: iStock.com/BraunS]

Lions Breath Yoga & Adventure

1
301-10534 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 1S1

For a couples’ workout that requires teamwork and communication, check out acrobatic yoga. This class is designed for partners; one person is the base and the other is the flyer. Together, you’ll move through various fun yet challenging poses, all while pretending you’re a member of Cirque du Soleil.

The Surf Studio

2
8708 51 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 5E8

For a touch of surf in our prairie city, check out a surfset class at The Surf Studio. You’ll have fun and strengthen your core, improve balance, build lean muscles and get some cardio in, all while trying to stay balanced on a wobbly surf board. You can also challenge yourself by doing yoga on a surf board.

Panther's Gym

3
11104 102 Ave NW Bsmt, Edmonton, AB T5K 2H4

Kick and punch your way to a stronger, healthier you at one of Panther Gym’s karate, kickboxing or boxing classes. While many gyms give off a macho, intimidating vibe, Panther provides a friendly, welcoming environment. Drop-in classes are available, or you can arrange to get a punch card to try out different classes.

Spinunity

4
208 Sioux Rd, Sherwood Park, AB T8A 3X5

Spinuity classes incorporate an upper-body workout into a traditional spin class, making for a high-intensity total body workout. On Sunday evenings, check out the Candlelit Spin and Yoga class, which is a half hour of spin followed by a rejuvenating session of candlelit yoga. What better way to end the week and prepare for the next?

Elite Dance Studio

5
11756 95 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5G 1L9

For a more artistic workout with your partner, break out your dancing shoes! Elite Dance Studio offers adult classes in Salsa and Country Two-Step. Check out their group classes or book your own private lessons. Elite Dance is owned by Dominic Lacroix & Delphine Romaire, eight-time Canadian ballroom and Latin champs – who better to learn from?

Wyld Archery Pro Shop & Lanes

6
14805 Yellowhead Trail NW, Edmonton, AB T5L 3C4

While I’m not sure if archery falls under a fitness activity, it’s definitely more active than binge-watching your favourite Netflix series. Besides, you’ll get an arm and shoulder workout by the end of the day and can feel like Katniss from The Hunger Games. Weekends here get busy, so come on the weekdays to avoid the crowds. Prices are reasonable for lane and equipment rentals, and you can shoot for as long as you like.

Edmonton Sport & Social Club

7
17406 106A Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 1E6

For couples who thrive on team sports and some friendly competition, check out ESSC’s roster of co-ed leagues, including slo-pitch, hockey, soccer and badminton, to name a few. For a drop-in program, check out their Friday night dodgeball games, or outdoor beach volleyball at Lendrum (during warm weather, of course).

Fun Park Amusement Center Ltd

8
13535 156th Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5V 1R9

Formerly called LZ Trampoline Park, JUMP 360 is a great way to have fun as a couple. Bouncing on trampolines for even a few minutes had my heart racing and after an hour I was spent (this shows how out-of-shape I am). There’s an enclosed area where you can pelt one another with dodgeballs and basketball nets where you can attempt some dunks.

So many nights are whiled away at the same local watering hole. You share some drinks and laughs and repeat, week after week. If you want to shake up your routine and have a memorable night out with your friends sans alcohol, check out this list of fun things to do around Edmonton. [Image credit: iStock.com/sanjeri]

While we all know and love the Royal Alberta Museum, you may be pleasantly surprised by what these lesser-known museums in Edmonton have to offer. [Image credit: iStock.com/wwing]
