299 King St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1J5

Smack in the centre of the Entertainment District, N’awlins Jazz & Dining boasts not only a delectable menu but a fine roster of live jazz shows. Dishes include Cajun catfish or the seafood medley, a mix of calamari, Cajun tiger shrimp, blackened scallops and lobster tail served upon a bed of jumbalaya. They also offer a pre-Mirvish Theatre special menu with items like gumbo soup and Bourbon Street penne – a mix of bacon, chicken, and cremini mushrooms in a vodka rosé sauce.

Southern Accent

839 College St, Toronto, ON M6H 1A1

Located in an old Victorian house in the Mirvish Village, Southern Accent has been serving authentic New Orleans fare for over 30 years. Popular dishes include their Canal Street jambalaya, sweet potato brownie, and the Bourbon Street chicken. Perhaps most notable is their wide variety of bourbon, served from their 1940s-style bar. They even have an in-house psychic available for readings (Marie Laveau would approve).

Founded in 2005, this sleek restaurant tries to capture the essence of New Orleans. Appetizers include the New Orleans gumbo Yaya (dark roux soup with chicken, sausage and rice) and the coconut beer Shrimp, served with a marmalade sauce. This chic location in Smythe Park also offers an impressive wine list and spirits selection.

Native to both saltwater and freshwater habitats, mussels are truly a unique treat, whether served steamed, smoked, barbequed or fried. They're also an excellent source of selenium and B12. Paired with fresh frites, soft bread or dropped into a scrumptious seafood stew, mussels represent a culinary tradition that’s alive and well in Toronto. [Image credit: iStock.com/ChristianColmer]
