Why knowing your body type before choosing a skirt matters

January 4, 2015

Finding clothes that fit and flatter our body isn’t always easy. Here's why knowing your body type before choosing a skirt matters when you want to look and feel your best.
Figuring out your body type

The first thing to do is figure out your body type. You can determine that by referring to one of six letters, each representing a different body type: A, H, I, O, V and X. Once you’ve identified which one describes you best, it will be easier to find skirts that flatter your figure and accentuate your style.

Body type "A":This body type is characterized by shoulders and busts smaller than your hips.

  • You should draw attention to the upper body and away from the bottom.
  • Your best choice is a straight or pencil skirt in dark colors. Wearing it with heels will enhance the effect and create the illusion of a longer leg.

Body type "H":Women with an H body type have fairly symmetrical shoulders and hips, with very little difference in size between the bosom and waist.

  • In this case, you should wear a skirt to enhance your hips.
  • An empire waist or flouncy skirt is a good look for you.

Body type "I":If your body type is I shaped, then you are tall and slender. Similar to the H, there is little difference in the size of the chest and waist area.

  • Look for a skirt that emphasizes your modest curves and highlights your femininity.
  • You can wear a tulle- or tutu-style skirt, or anything that adds volume and roundness.

Body type "O": The O silhouette belongs to women who are rounded or apple-shaped, with little waist definition.

  • Your choice of clothing should seek to minimize your curves.
  • Your ideal skirt is a pencil skirt falling above the knee. Miniskirts should be avoided.

Body type "V": The V shape is marked by a shoulder and chest area that is larger than the hips.

  • The right skirt will create balance and fullness in the lower body, and draw the eye downward.
  • A tango skirt is perfect for you. Its movement will balance your figure and elongate the legs.

Body type "X": Women with an X silhouette typically have the most coveted shape. The upper body is in perfect proportion to the bottom. All shapes and sizes work well for this figure.

  • Spoilt for choice, you can wear minis to show off your great legs.
  • X shapes have narrow and flat stomachs, which look great in high-waisted skirts.

Regardless of your body type, there's a skirt made just for you. By focusing on your strengths and being honest about what you want to hide, you can identify which skirts look best. Once you discover your ideal skirt style, you’ll find a look more flattering than anything you’ve ever owned—and feel better than ever before!
