The Cornerstone Music Café has developed a simple yet very popular concept in the Deer Ridge neighbourhood of Calgary. It is both a music school that offers lessons for children and it's also a café.
While the business began as a music school, Jim and his wife Sylvia – who actually first met at the very music studio they now own – decided to change things up and start selling café fare in 2012. The result has been a unique mix of services that resonate with locals.
"I'm a professional musician and I play in several different bands in town," says co-owner, Jim Johnson. "We have fifteen different teachers for piano, vocals, guitar, bass and drums.” He says all the lessons are private and he's worked with all the teachers before.
Cornerstone Music Café is certainly a unique coffee house. While music students study their art in the back room, musicians perform in the front where food and beverages are served. The café’s madras cocoa is a blend of India-inspired flavours perfectly blended with their famous hot cocoa mix. For the less adventurous, the hot chocolate can be ordered sans spice, and is delicious in its own right.
