A new, welcome addition to the Drive, Jamjar is a folk-Lebanese restaurant offering traditional fare along with take-out hummus, and proving very popular.
Whenever a new restaurant opens up on Commercial Drive, it's a big deal. With its string of institutions that have withstood the test of time — Havana, The Reef, Marcelo's to name a few — there simply isn't much real estate left for newbies. But if the lineups pouring out of Jamjar since its October 2014 opening are any indication, the Lebanese eatery is a welcome addition to the ‘hood. Maybe that’s because the new kid on the block is unlike anything the city has ever seen.
“There simply aren’t very many Lebanese restaurants in Vancouver,” says Lebanon-born owner Fadi Eid, who left a career as a food and beverage manager at the Fairmont to open up the eatery. His concept for the “folk Lebanese” restaurant is to serve healthy, traditional Lebanese mezes (fattoush salad, roasted eggplant dip and saj-fresh flatbread) made with super fresh seasonal ingredients, plus a few dishes normally found only in Lebanese homes. “Lebanese restaurant menus are usually quite fixed but we serve stews like Lamb Laban Immo — lamb shank cooked in a yogurt sauce and served with rice,” he says.
Most items are meant to be served family-style, and washed down with Lebanese beer or cocktails laced with cooking spices (the Date Lavender Old Fashioned with date molasses, fresh lavender and lavender syrup, is a must). Brought to you in a laid back, modern setting (think reclaimed wood tables, antique mirrors and windows), Jamjar is the ideal spot for date night, girls’ night and everything in between.
Satisfy your hummus hankerings throughout the day at this Lebanese inspired tapas bar on The Drive. Mix and match hot and cold mezze plates for a sampling of fresh Middle Eastern flavours. The creamy chickpea hummus is a classic snack but you’d be remiss if you didn’t try the hummus trio, a vegetarian-friendly platter that comes with an original-style dip and two seasonal flavours. As if the name didn’t give it away already, these creamy spreads are also available in take-home jars.
Jamjar is a Lebanese tapas restaurant on The Drive specializing in communal eating and is renowned for its delicious hummus, which you can buy in jars to go. The wide variety of hot and cold mezze dishes make this a great venue for a crowd; roasted cauliflower, lentil stew and falafel are all menu must-trys. Stop in for lunch or dinner or just sit at the bar and order a Turkish coffee in a beautiful metallic serving pot. Alternatively, try the Turkish Delight cocktail, which features Turkish coffee mixed with Baileys, halva (a sweet Middle Eastern confection) and cardamom bitters.
Specializing in Lebanese cuisine, Jamjar definitely knows how to turn something niche into something everyone can enjoy. Veggie-heavy tapas with Middle Eastern spices and a seasonal selection of hummus? Count me in! Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant’s falafel, cauliflower stew, fattoush salad and lamb sausage all come highly recommended. You can also buy jars of their hummus and dips to take home (hence the name Jamjar).
