I've become skeptical of places with many glowing reviews having all 10s and generously laced with multiple exclamation points. I've had just too many mediocre experiences in many of those places lately to pay much attention to those scores. The restaurant business has entirely too many challenges for any operation to consistently attain those impossibly high scores. However, Applewood Fish and Chips really is doing just about everything very well.
Having recently read some of the reviews here, being hungry, and in the neighborhood I impulsively decided to give it a try and I'm particularly glad I did. This experience will teach me not to rush to prejudge a place without more valid evidence.
I was greeted by the friendly folks here, they actually look at you and smile and was promptly offered a seat. It's an impressively clean place with freshly painted blue and yellow walls somewhat over-decorated with many marine blandishments. Very 70's. The spotless carpet looked brand new. However, I didn't come for atmosphere, I was hungry.
The steaming plate of hot fish and chips was delivered by the cheerful waitress and I dug in to the decent portion. The fish was just right. A thin, crisp, golden batter enveloped a moist, just barely flakey haddock fillet that tasted like haddock, not oil. Why can't more places do this? The likely combination of fresh cooking oil and summertime was not quite as kind to the fries. They were cooked past just right resulting in a dry and not particularly flavorful product with a lot of short and broken pieces in the order. I picked out the best looking of the fries and left the rest. This is a tough time of year because operators are struggling to cope with year-old potatoes where every batch has a different starch and moisture content. The Wing's tartar sauce served with the order is a very poor product being made from some cheap emulsified oil and not mayonnaise. Fish as good as this doesn't need it anyway. An acceptable ketchup was served in a red squeeze bottle without my having to ask.
So; clean place, good food, good value, and with service by pleasant and competent people, I'll be back to try some of the other menu choices.
My friends and I heard about this place through the office. It was highly recommended. The place is really well done up, and very welcoming. The waiter was very cute, and made it a great experience. The food was awesome. It was a very generous piece of halibut, and the batter was light, and not greasy. The chips were beautifully cooked. I'm glad I heard about this place. I definately would like to bring my family here. Coming back? YES!
Best fish & chips in the city. The business has been owned by the same family for years and they really know what they are doing.
Service is friendly and cheerful. I usually take out rather than eat-in, because I live so close to the restaurant.
