I was very pleasantly surprised by this place...

I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. It almost looks like a fast food joint from the outside and it's not in a trendy location...but this is the best Indian food I've ever eaten. And in contrast to one of the other reviewers we had very friendly and competent service. The prices are very reasonable and there's free parking to boot. It's all good.

Early around 6PM recently my daughter and I sat for 20 minutes (I looked) and were ignored, not offered water nor eye contact, let alone asked about ordering anything. 9 other diners were there (we counted to pass the time). It was less than half full. I was impressed by my child's quiet and calm. After 20 minutes, I thought about taking one of the water jugs on the service counter and pouring it onto the waiter's trousers, I was so annoyed. Was it simply a hatred of children, were we somehow not appropriate clients? I was sorely disappointed to have promised my child a delicious meal and have to leave with nothing. When we went to go, my complaint about the time and incompetent service were met with arrogant or perhaps mentally challenged grins from the staff. This did not improve my mood. I do not regret the horrid things I said, but it was not a satisfying experience. My experience was embarrassing and the wait staff were rude, arrogant and thus intolerable. Shame as the take out is pretty good.

There’s always a line-up at this Christie Pitts curry house so you know chef Raj Veerella is doing something right. The menu features a mix of traditional North Indian and South Indian recipes made with handpicked spices from the region. The vindaloo is a fiery meat dish (your choice of lamb, beef or goat) simmered with potato in a hot sour sauce that’s sure to alight your senses. There are also plenty of milder meat, seafood and vegetarian options for your less adventurous pals.

Small and quiet, with a unique indoor patio, Banjara almost seems like an awesome apology for the café that previously occupied the space. Trust that any lunch date here will be tasty and satisfying, no matter the diet. The sheer variety of Indian cuisine offered here can keep vegan and vegetarian palates satisfied for years, and the butter chicken is amazing.
