This is a great Japanese restaurant, been there a couple of times and just two days ago brought two of my Australian friends to try the Tappenaki lunch. They were really very impressed by the food and the service especially the chef who was very entertaining doing the onion volcano and the egg cracking. Will definitely continue to go for meals.

The best around

As others have said top sushi in the GTA. My wife and I go at least once a month. We took one of our girls and she was watching the chef cook for patrons search Abigail rose cooking at the villa on youtube and see what happend. Amazing service and to allow a little girl to do this I was thrilled..food A+++ service A+++ and very reasonable cost.

take out only

This place has some of the best sushi in the GTA, but their service is terrible. We went in with my kids and ordered appetizers, they arrived aft our dinner and they forgot one of them. The thing that bugs me the most about this place is they will bring the food to each person when it's ready instead of serving the whole table at the same time. Restaurant owners take note; serve dinner to the whole table not one at a time. So I decided that I will only do take out. Oh ya it's pricey.

Definite 5 star!!! Have ordered take out from here several times & it has always been awesome! The garlic beef rolls are to absolute die for! Never had beef that melts in my mouth and requires no chewing. We would like to hotbeds to dine inside next as we have always just ordered take out :)

Excellent Rolls

The Villa makes the best Maki Rolls in Whitby. No question! As an avid Sushi lover I've been to every Japanese Restaurant in Whitby at least once. This is the place I keep going back to. My girlfriend and I will typically order the following which always impresses us. It's ALWAYS GOOD and easy to share!!! 1. Miso Soups Pretty standard fare here. 2. Large Green Salad (to share) This is a hidden gem on the menu because the Japanese dressing is really really good. The large salad is cheaper than two small salads and comes with more variety of vegetables. 3. Spicy Tuna Roll My favourite roll of all time. The texture and quality is perfect - a very thin layer of rice - the roll is loaded with a crispy spicy mixture of tuna goodness. I could eat these all day!! 4. Spicy Broccoli Roll This is another gem on the menu that you can only get at the Villa. Very similar to the Tuna Roll ... awesome! 5. Tuna or Salmon Roll A basic staple that is always rolled tight with not too much rice. You can't go wrong here. Always good. 6. Yam Tempura Roll or Bean Curd Roll Yummy little rolls to add a variety to the meal. I've only ever seen Bean Curd Rolls at The Villa and they are tasty good!! We always stick with water and get plenty of refills. And of course we dip our rolls in Soy Sauce and Wasabi. Anyhow the above meal typically costs less than $30 which is a great deal for two people. And the quality and texture and taste of the Rolls is the best in Whitby by a mile. Glad to recommend this spot.

Fantastic

This place continues to amaze me. The food is fantastic. if there is a down side its that the waitresses don't always speak fluent English but its no different than any sushi or Japanese i have been to. Bottom line is that this is the best Japanese restaurant within 50 miles.

Second time not as charming as first

We went to The Villa for the first time about two years ago (walked in because it looked interesting from the outside; didn't consult recommendations or reviews). It was a great experience: the food was fantastic, the atmosphere great, the price reasonable, and the show at the tepanyaki table highly entertaining. Since then, we've tried other sushi restos in the Durham region, and we generally love them. But for a special occasion, we somehow remembered that we hadn't been to The Villa in a long time, so we wanted to invite a friend--a real sushi connoisseur--to this. The result was mixed, but we can say that it's a firm "maybe" bordering on "no" whether we return to The Villa. First, the reservation: It being a Saturday night, I called ahead just to make sure they'd have room for five people, at 7. It was *extremely* hard to make myself understood, and to understand the employees (yes, the first woman had to pass the phone to a second woman, who was still equally hard to communicate with). I got off the phone assured that there was a table for us, a "regular table" as she said that the tepanyaki table (or what she also called the "sushi table") was "not available". When we arrived, the host seemed confused when he consulted his list, and did not seem to find our reservation. He went to the back, and then returned saying that yes, he could fit us in. We noted that it wasn't very busy, and they had plenty of room. He asked, "Regular table or tepanyaki table?" I replied, "Oh, the lady on the phone said it wasn't available. But if you have room for 5, we'd take the tepanyaki." He looked over at the table, where there were exactly 5 spots left, then said, "No, sorry, not available." So we were left wondering, "Huh? Then why did you ask us? And what's with the 5 empty spots?" My friend said that maybe it was already reserved, but there were no reserved signs anywhere. Anyway, it wasn't that important, so on to the meal. We were three adults and two kids, and ordered a large variety of dishes to share (see below). I don't know if sushi restaurants are getting better in the Durham region, or if this one just wasn't as good as the first time. For starters, the house salad's Japanese dressing was not as good as others we've tried, and the seaweed salad was especially disappointing, with more cucumber than seaweed, and certainly not a lot of seafood. The edamame came a bit on the cold side, as did the Sake. (When we asked our host to re-heat the Sake, he seemed surprised at the request, and when it came back, it was still barely above room temperature.) The sushi was just okay--nothing special. Nothing blew our socks off with the freshness and taste. On our dinner-for-two plate, we were disappointed with the large amount of crab sticks (generally considered a "cheap" seafood substitute) instead of another real crab or another fish. The House special "spicy rice" that we ordered based on someone's rave review here on this board, came really bland and hardly spicy. It certainly was no different than your basic Chinese fried rice (which might have to do with the fact that we were well aware that all the employees were Chinese). At least the kids enjoyed their Bento boxes with teriyaki chicken, veggies, and tempura items. We skipped the restaurant's dessert choices, as we had brought our own birthday cake in, to be served at the table. The host motioned me aside, to say that the cake had come in "collapsed", which meant that the icing was all smudge. I can't be sure if that was my fault or theirs, but I had transported it properly from Toronto the previous day, and it had had no problem. When our server brought the collapsed cake, my husband took a look and joked that she had tasted it, to which she laughed embarrassingly and said, "No, no, we not eat it." But later, when she brought us the forks and plates, she did let slip the following, "It's a very good cake. Good choice." Hmmmm . . . Conclusion: others are better.

They have the best sushi I have ever had, very nice atmosphere, and friendly staff. If you like sushi you won't be disappointed. I have tried others places in and around Whitby and this is my favorite.

used to go to the Villa

i used to always go to the Villa as i am a big fan of Sushi. after finding a new place (Azian) on taunton by wilson i now know how over priced the Villa is. Azian has the same selection with more noodle dishes for those who like, same great quality food as the Villa for half the price. time to adjust your prices!!!

The Spicy rice is fantastic, and the sushi always fresh. The service could be improved if the waitresses understood english better. Trying to change a portion size or add vegetables can sometimes be a painful experience.

DELICIOUS

The Villa was a fabulous surprise! It doesn't look like much from outside but the decor is lovely and the food is excellent. I have had both the Teppanyaki and the sushi and have also purchased party platters, Everything was well done and well presented. The restaurant is also spotless which is something that I always appreciate.

The BEST Meal

Went on a Saturday night with two friends. The atmosphere was fun - busy, lots of different people, laughter... The service was fine, not overly good or bad. The food was phenomenal!!! I recommend the sushi pizza. Love that they put the tempura bits in the sushi. So good! We are definitely going back and I can't wait. I actually cant stop thinking about the amazing food we ate...

The best sushi place in Whitby, hands down.

I've been here at least two dozen times and everyone I have taken has loved it. The spicy rolls are amazing. Fresh and tasty. They decor is great. The service is outstanding. I've been to every sushi restaurant in Whitby and there isn't even a close second. There are cheaper places, sure, but you get what you pay for. The Villa have a wider menu that the others and a lot more vegetarian, non-fishy options compared to, well, any sushi place anywhere. Not just Whitby. I've also eaten sushi at about ten different places in downtown Toronto. None come close. So yeah. Go there. Go now! For the love of wasabi, go!!!!

I love this Japanese Restaurant, the food is always fresh. I have eaten at alot of Japanese Restaurants in Toronto and this is comparable or better than some of those places. The prices are relative to most other Japanese restaurants and the menu is diverse. I would recommend this restaurant to those that like Japanese food, or for those who are willing to try it. Plus they offer tepanaki (the food is cooked in front of you).

We visit The Villa (not sure why they picked this name for a Japanese steak and sushi restaurant?) on a regular basis. The food is always to a high standard - the sushi is very fresh and well presented. The decor is very nice compared to other sushi restaurants in the area - it's very cool and modern. The staff are really friendly and attentative, and the prices are reasonable. They also have a teppanyaki table which we have eaten at before - it's a lot of fun and again, the food is great.
