Carlos Ferreira is the man behind Ferreira Group, which was founded in 1996 and is recognized in the world of Portuguese cuisine. Before opening Café Vasco da Gama in 2004, he had owned Café Ferreira since 1998. Carlos also owns Taverne F, which has been open since 2010 in the Quartier des spectacles.
Through multiple projects, flavours and Portuguese colours, Carlos wanted to show his culture and country to Montrealers who were new to it. In 1995, he opened a Portuguese embassy downtown. “Café Vasco da Gama started from a concept that is very sought-out today: fast food and quality,” says Carlos.
According to Carlos, many restaurateurs seek to make a living and not necessarily to promote culture and quality. This is not the case for Carlos; he always strives to act as an ambassador of his culture.

I do not recommend this place ever ever ever! Worst service ever coming from a manager. The owner/ manager Jorge is very rude- I am shocked by the way he talked to us. A very disrespectful man, who sadly lacks a lot of professionalism towards his clients. A perfect example of a manager that clearly does not get the fact that customer service is EVERYTHING, especially in a big city like Montreal. With so many little cafés around the block, giving people such a bad service will not help

View this Smart ListCafé Vasco da Gama is on one of the side streets not far from Ste-Catherine West, the popular downtown shopping hub. This place is usually hopping at lunchtime, mainly because of the duck confit sandwich, which consists of fig and duck purée (not kidding) on fresh bread with slices of rich São Jorge cheese (from Portugal), all grilled panini-style. For something completely different (and seafood-themed), a shrimp wrap with mango and avocado might be a good choice.
View this Smart ListFurnished with Portuguese-style decor, Café Vasco da Gama opens for breakfast daily from 7 am. Their coffee will wake you up, while pastries and other treats will satisfy your sweet tooth. On the savoury side, several omelettes are available, including Mediterranean and Portuguese versions, as well as wraps and more traditional options such as bagels, baguettes or croque-matin. All plates are garnished with fresh fruit, to replenish your vitamins. Outdoor seating is available on the terrace, but the interior offers more privacy for conversations.
